South Africa 2018
Paradigm Shift | Ubuntu
“Ubuntu” is a South African philosophy of social justice through the notion that our own well-being is tied to the well-being of others, and it is this shared responsibility of our community that binds us together and makes us human. This concept was revealed through the 2018 UW Runstad Fellows’ travels in South Africa, which they identified as their destination to examine a paradigm shift in equitable and sustainable growth. The group presented their discoveries from Cape Town and Johannesburg, addressing how the lens of race and social justice shows up in the built environment in aspects of informality, affordability, civicness, and climate change—and how we might apply these lessons to our home in Seattle.
