Julie Howe
Julie Howe, Ph.D. brings over twenty-five years of experience in housing development and asset management to her research and teaching as affiliate faculty in the Runstad Department of Real Estate.
Prior to joining the faculty, Julie built a career managing the acquisition, rehabilitation, and development of multifamily and single-family housing, spanning conventional, affordable/LIHTC, and demonstration projects; senior and family housing; and both ownership and rental models. She has served as director, development manager, and investment manager for organizations including Security Properties, Threshold Housing and Shelter Resources, and as Principal at Urban Evolution. She has served as appointee on Seattle’s Affordable Middle-Income Housing Advisory Council and Social Housing Board and remains particularly passionate about healthy workforce housing. Julie is also a licensed real estate Broker.
Drawn throughout her career to the complex and innovative, in particular projects blazing new trails in how we live more affordably and build community, such as cooperatives, co-living, and co-housing, Julie pursued this interest through an interdisciplinary PhD at the University of Washington. Her doctoral research used quantitative methods to examine how cooperative housing tenure shapes resident wellbeing in Canada, drawing on multiple waves of the Canadian Housing Survey. She continues this research program today.
Julie holds an undergraduate degree in environmental design and architecture from the University of Colorado – Boulder, a Master of Urban Planning with a Certificate in Commercial Real Estate from the University of Washington, and a PhD from the University of Washington.
